It is well known that men dominate the technology industries, and have done so since technology begun, but this doesn’t mean that these jobs should only be for men. The percentage of women who work in the tech industry has increased over the years, however tech jobs are still only held by 31% of women in the UK, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS). Whilst the proportion of men to women working in tech spaces isn’t equal, it is a great improvement from 2020, when it was found that only 17% of technology employees were women. It has also been revealed that 73% of employees in the tech world agree that the industry is sexist. Surely this means that right now is the best time for women to get into tech, as there is a clear move to hire more women!
Why should women get into tech?
- The technology industry is fast changing, and constantly evolving, which means more opportunities, and no likelihood of the industry dying out any time soon!
- Tech is one of the highest paid job sectors.
- The tech industry typically has a more flexible schedule, with a lot of roles being work-from-home, or flexible working hours.
- Low cost of education – a degree is not always needed, and there are many low cost, or even free online training courses to get certified, or gain tech skills. Become a member of Biz Women here to gain access to workshops in a range of business and tech skills.
- Tech is very creative and collaborative, which makes many roles enjoyable and prevents your workday from feeling too repetitive.
A common misunderstanding is that technology jobs are all coding, however this is not the case, technology jobs are often about problem solving – something women are proven to be better at than men!
