There are many statistics available about the representation of women in the tech industry. Here are a few points to consider:
- According to the National Center for Women & Information Technology, women made up just 26% of the computing workforce in 2019.
- A study by the National Science Foundation found that women with computing degrees are less likely to work in the tech industry than their male counterparts.
- Research from LeanIn.org and McKinsey & Company found that women in tech are less likely to be promoted to manager and more likely to leave the industry than men.
- Despite these challenges, some companies have made progress in increasing the representation of women in their tech departments. For example, at Google, the percentage of women in technical roles increased from 19% in 2014 to 23% in 2019.
- In 2022, the Web Summit, one of the world’s biggest Tech events had over 71,000 attendees out of which 42% of attendees were female.
It’s important to note that diversity and inclusion in the tech industry is not just a women’s issue, but a business issue. Companies with diverse teams tend to perform better financially and make better products. There are many organisations and initiatives working to support and promote diversity in tech including us here at Biz Women® and we intend to continue to highlight this important issue.
