In a landmark initiative, the British Embassy alongside UN Women orchestrated a forum that marked a significant stride towards gender equality and women’s empowerment in the business realm. This assembly, a melting pot of influential corporate leaders, business associations, and representatives from the Guatemalan Ministry of Labour, was not just a discussion but a declaration of intent to weave the principles of gender equality deeply into the fabric of workplace and community.
The heart of this forum was the exchange of innovative practices that champion women’s roles in both the business sector and society at large. Amidst vibrant discussions, the Guatemalan Government’s vow to bolster women’s crucial contribution to a more prosperous and egalitarian society resonated strongly, mirroring a global acknowledgment of women’s pivotal roles in driving sustainable development.
The session underscored the business imperative for gender equality, illustrating how such equity not only propels economic opportunities for companies but also contributes significantly to national development. The seven Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) underpinned the day’s agenda, focusing on high-level leadership for gender equality, ensuring worker wellbeing, and promoting education and professional growth for women, among other key areas.
With a global backdrop of 9,000 companies integrating these principles, Guatemala’s proactive engagement, with 48 companies already on board and more in the coaching pipeline, is commendable. This initiative extends to British enterprises in Guatemala across various sectors, demonstrating a united front in the mission for gender equality.
The British Government’s Women and Girls Strategy, launched in 2023, is in perfect harmony with the ethos of the WEPs, aiming to dismantle barriers and unlock economic, social, and educational opportunities for women and girls worldwide. This strategy is a testament to the UK’s dedication to elevating the status of women and girls, paving the way for their full participation and leadership in all walks of life.
This forum is not just a milestone but a beacon of hope and a call to action for the global community to embrace and enact the principles of gender equality and women’s empowerment. It signifies a collective leap towards a future where the contributions of women are recognised, valued, and celebrated across all spheres of society.
